Lockdown, books and more books

How are you all doing? I hope you’re keeping safe. I don’t even know how long we’ve been in lockdown anymore, I’ll be honest… I think it’s week 9 we’re on, but does it even matter anymore?

We need to keep ourselves safe – that’s all!

It’s been an interesting couple of weeks. As you may know, I work in digital marketing. One of the few industries that seems to have been less impacted by Corona! Which means I’ve been super busy. Welded to my screen from probably 8:30 to 3:30pm with very few breaks. That is most definitely not a healthy way to live!

One day I’ll write about why I think I am a Luddite, but for now, let’s just say that I am not always technology’s biggest fan. Despite being immersed in it for over 20 years! I remember in the early ’90s having a computer. I used it for writing uni assignments, that was it, even though I was doing a tech qualification. Most of my spare time was spent listening to music, reading or out socialising. Up until recently, I often felt that that life was long gone and that I would never go back to my halcyon days.

The lockdown has affected us all in odd ways, some people have started new hobbies, other people have been practising self-care, me? I’ve been reading like a woman possessed…

In the last couple of weeks, I’ve read a LOT, like over 4 books. I don’t think I read that many in the last year!

I don’t get what has happened to me. I am also listening to music every day whilst working, not that I didn’t before, but this is more about listening to full albums and rediscovering old favourites.  I am totally not complaining, it just seems strange that it’s taken a global pandemic for me to realise that I am spending too much time in front of a screen – says she who is now writing a blog.

I’ve been alternating business/self-help books with a fiction book. I am pretty narrow in my range of fiction, give me a dystopian novel any day over pretty much anything else. Whereas with non-fiction I am less picky. This way of reading seems to be working well. My goal was to read 20 books this year. I didn’t get off to a great start – but I am flying now. Expect some book reviews later!

I hope this new habit continues into our new life. I am trying to stay away from my phone in an evening. Constantly checking social media for updates is never healthy, even when that is what you do for a living! We all need time out, we all need to take care of ourselves. Sometimes that means unplugging.

Speaking of taking care, this week is mental health awareness week. I was going to create some grandiose post about my struggles, but somehow I didn’t want to share that this week. Maybe next time eh?

So that’s it for today, somewhat short and sweet. Stay safe out there!
